Kadokawa guidebook

It is an earthen form from Scandinavia, infused with a soul by the ritual of Rune. Inside its body are magical tablets carved with runes, which give it powerful magical powers.
北欧のスカンジナビアに伝わる、ルーネの儀式によって魂を吹き込まれた土人形。体の中にはルーン文字を刻んだ魔法のタブレットが隠されていて、強大な魔力を発揮する。

JICC guidebook

A wizard with powers gave life to a dirtbag, Golem. It has the face of a monster created by Frankenstein and moves surprisingly lightly. It is powerful, but not a very formidable foe, as it does not use weapons or armor.
力を持った魔法使いが土くれに命を与えたのがゴーレムだ。フランケンシュタインの怪物のような顔をしており、意外と身軽な動きをする。力はあるが、武器や鎧を使わないために、さほど手ごわい敵ではない。

Origin of the name / 名前の由来

This name comes directly from the golem, a self-moving mud doll that appears in Jewish folklore.
名前の由来はユダヤ教の伝承に登場する自分で動く泥人形であるゴーレムそのまま。

Marukatsu Famicom 1987 Vol.14

It is a mud puppet with a magical artificial life. It fights with its bare hands, but beware of its rock-crushing power and swiftness.
魔法によって人工的に生命が宿ったドロ人形。素手で戦うが、そのすばやさには要注意。岩をうちくだくパワーがあるんだ。

Note

As for the character design, it was an arranged version of the Giant, influenced by the moai (ion turrets) in Gradius and the scene in the manga Mitsume ga Tooru (by Osamu Tezuka), in which the moai statues themselves moved and shifted.
The necklace is a reference to an ancient accessory.
記憶が定かではないが、キャラクターデザインとしてはジャイアントのアレンジ版で
グラディウスのモアイ(イオン砲台)と漫画・三つ目がとおる(手塚 治虫 著)の中で、モアイ像自体が動いて移動したシーンに影響を受けている。
首飾りは、古代のアクセサリーを参考にした。
The PV and Early official illustration look exactly like the boss character Rockgaea, but of Golem.
PVと公式開発資料のイラストはボスキャラ・ロックガイアにそっくりであるが、ゴーレムのもの。
